Holiday Happenings

This weekend was our annual cookie party. We make "gingerbread houses" (aka foam kits) as well as decorating cookies. Later the girls go upstairs to the dress up chest and come down as princesses. A good time for all!

In the 70s, I made my niece, Diane a bed quilt. It has disintegrated-time for a new one. I used Blanche Young's Blooming 9-Patch pattern and had it longarm quilted. It looks so good on our bed, I may have to do one in green and peach for me.

Busy in La Veta

I haven't posted here in awhile. I have joined Facebook and have been posting there. Here's what I've been up to this week.

On Saturady I drove to La Veta to help Ricky Tims organize his new studio. Here is Ricky with one of his "kids"- Raisin. The new studio is what used to be the attached garage. It is now killer! We filmed the whole process, so watch for the video on www.thequiltshow.com. and possibly an article in The Quilt Life magazine.

Sunday Ricky, Justin and I met some of their friends at the Main Street Diner in La Veta. It was just as good as it looks. Two days we had lunch at the new Next Door Deli, which featured gourmet sandwiches. Justin cooked delicious dinners as well.Who knew La Veta was such a food paradise??

On the way back to the house from the Ricky Tims Gallery, we passed this herd of 14 deer. Definitely not a sight I see in Houston, but an everyday occurence here.

Today I'll be driving the rest of the way home. This afternoon and tomorrow will be spent decorating for Christmas. Go Ho, Ho Ho!

This is just one of the tables in Saturday's class. I teach again tomorrow, then it's home to Houston for awhile.
Lester callled last night and told me one of my quilts is in the latest Texas Monthly magazine. Cn't wait to see that when I get home. Tried the Barnes & Noble here in Cedar Rapids ast night, but they don't carry it. Guess Iowans don't really care all that much about what happend in TX :)

So sorry I haven't posted in awhile. I have joined the facebook nation and have been trying to learn how to use it. I still don't have the knack of posting pics easily. I think my resolution is too high.
I have been working on a traditional Blooming Nine Patch for my neice. I gave her a quilt in the 70s which is now in tatters. Rather than repair it, it's time for a new one. I'll post a pic later (it's a surprise).

This weekend I'm teaching at Pine Needles in Cedar Rapids, IA. This is a terrific shop if you're ever in the area. They have tons of stuff and Jill, Henry and their staff are super people. You'll love it- I know I do!

My New Car

Yesterday I bacame the proud owner of a new GMC Terrain. I loved my Rendezvous, but they don't make them anymore (story of my life). I've driven it home from the dealership and to the Museum of Fine Arts. So far, I'm very pleased. I'm not hard on a car (my 2003 Rendezvous had 67,500 miles on it) so we'll be together for awhile. My next long road trip will be to Fort Worth in July to hear Ricky Tims sing in the Donald B Cowan Legacy Choir. I'll report back then...

Last Weekend at POC

Last weekend Lester and I went to our beach house at Port O'Connor, better known as POC. This is the sunrise, taken from our deck. I just got home from NC on Friday, so didn't get down until Sat. afternoon. We went to a party that night, then to dinner with friends Sunday evening. Other than that, I worked a jigsaw puzzle and relaxed. All in all, a wonderful way to spend Memorial Day weekend.

The Kindness of Quilters

Yesterday's class was in New Bern, NC at New Bern Fabric Center. This bear was in front of the Hampton. I have taught in Bern, Switzerland, whose city mascot is the bear. Last year was New Bern's 300th anniversary, and businesses in town bought and decorated these "new" bears. Full circle!

Now about the kindenesses. While setting up, I dropped my projector and broke off two cords. Karen immediately left to shop for them. After going to 3 shops, she finally found them. Talk about going above and beyond! Carole had prepard homemade chicken salad for lunch and made me a picnic dinner to take with me. Sure was nice to have a homemade meal on the road. Thanks to you all.

Finally, when I arrived at my hotel in Chapel Hill, I was greeted by this welcome basket full of goodies. Thanks, Thimble Pleasures. The lemon cookies and gourmet tea bags were a real treat! I'm coming to class today, armed with new cords and a full tummy.

Accent Sewing

Yesterday I taught Sheer Delights in Murrels Inlet. They were enthusiastic and talented. Sheyl and her staff are very helpful-these students are spoiled! That's Sheryl threading the 830 (love that machine).

Today I'm still on the Atlantic Coast, this time in New Bern, NC. It is unseasonably hot-feels like home!

Blockheads

Yesterday I drove to Beaumont to take pictures for my Nov. lecture at IQF in Houston featuring TX quilters. Here is Karen Stone in her home with just a few of her fabrics.

Renella then drove us to Orange and the home of Laverne Mathews. Laverne is the one in the middle in brown. The rest of the gang are all Blockheads, a bee that has been meeting for 30 years. We had a fun day looking at quilts, talking about quilts, and EATING! Thanks, Blockheads, for a great time.

Revising AQS Classes

Since the AQS classes had to move to the First Baptist Church, we can't use any irons. This prompted a fusing party in our bedroom last night. How many students can say their sample was prepared by me, Sue Nickels and Katie Pasquini Masopust?

Goings on in Paducah

The Ohio River is on the rise! Mayor Paxton gave the word to put up the floodgates Sunday. That meant the annual AQS Quilt Show had to move since the Convention Center was built on the wrong side of the levee (who thought that one up??) Local Paducahans brought their lawn chairs to watch the spectacle.

On a happier note, The National Quilt Museum celebrated their 20th Anniversary last night with a party for its patrons. Isn't this a great cake?

AQS Show-Chapter One

Friday Katie Pasquini Masopust and I flew to Nahville, then drove to Paducah. Donna Wilder drove down from PA with her sister, Susan. Here we are at Cynthia's, a great restaurant in downtown Paducah. After dinner, we went to Wal-Mart for groceries in two cars. When Katie and I drove up we heard a loud siren noise and locked doors. Turned out we were in a tornado warning. We tried to call Donna and Susan, only to find out that they were locked INSIDE the store. They ended up staying that way for 45 minutes. Luckily, no tornado came close.

Today we started juding at 8:30. Early in the afternoon, darned if we didn't get another siren warning. We moved to an inside room to wait it out. Klaudeen Hansen, our intrepid leader, didn't miss a beat. She simpy moved the miniature quilts to the room and we continued our judging. Quilters always find a way!

3 Million milestone

Well, it happened this weekend. While bobbin drawing on Lucid Moments III, I made my 3 millionth stitch on my Bernina 830! Did I mention I love that machine???

I've now completed 4 quilts in my latest series, Lucid Moments. I started this with my entry for the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative, which will be auctioned off in October at the Houston International Quilt Festival. These three are up for sale as soon as I post them on my website. I had a productive weekend!

Pinata, Anyone?

At Sew Expo last month, I demoed for the Bernina booth. One of the accessories I used was the Circular Embroidery Attachment (most machine companies make one). I had such fun with the decorative stitches I decided to turn it into a class. Here's the finished quilt. The colored blocks are all cut from one yard of Ricky Tims' multicolored dyed fabric. This fabric is so luscious, you can't go wrong! All the threads are 40 wt polyester from Superior Threads. I'm working with Ricky to provide this as a kit. I'll keep you posted about that. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this jolt of color on this Spring day!

Alzheimer's Quilt

Last week was spent doing everyday stuff-nothing note- or pictureworthy. Lester had orthoscopic knee surgery on Friday, so we had a quiet and painful weekend at home. He is back at work now, so I had time yesterday to make my quilt for the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Iinitiative. This summer, my "team" will compete for the Stanley Cup (I think it's a Flat Stanley). There will be 10 quilts for sale, with all the proceeds to benefit Alzheimer's research. My 16" quilt is titled "Lucid Moments".

My other donation quilt, Going In Circles, was mailed off yesterday to the National Quilt Museum. This is their 20th Anniversary. If you're in Paducah, check out the quilts for sale hanging in the entry hall.

This week, I'm getting ready for classes at Empty Spools and AQS. Right now, though, I'm off to get my nails done. AAh!

Yesterday was a day off, thank goodness. It was a luxury to sleep in (for me, that's 8 am). I spent the morning emptying all 3 suitcases and rearranging everything. It is so nice to have everything back in place. Of course, I also sent a heavy box home to myself. Now I can buy even more!

Child's Play with Bernina

One of the perks for coming back to a venue is seeing friends. Several years ago, Rihana, her Mom and Grandmom came by the booth and Rihana sewd with me. This year, she's 12 and is part of the Sunday Pro-Am Fashion Show. She is fearless on the machine and sews like a pro. You go, girl!

Sew Expo in Puyalllup

I love working with the Bernina dealers here in the booth. Today I got to see and catch up with several old frineds and a lot of new ones. New Camera

I have been considering a high end camera for awhile now. After reading about this new Nikon D7000, I knew it was the one. I used to use a Nikon SLR for slides so it is not a complete learning curve. I'll keep you posted...

Go Texan

Today is Go Texan Day. Everyone puts on their best Western duds and pretends like they're cowboys. Our Rodeo starts next week and today is the day all the trail rides converge at Memorial Park. Tomorrow there's a parade through dontown Houston.

Rodeo is a big deal in TX, but particularly here in Houston. Being on a rodeo committee is kind of like being on the Crews in LA for Mardi Gras. My husband is on the Parade Committee. They set up bleachers for the handicapped and elderly and provide lunch. He likes it because all their work is done before the rodeo starts.

My family was part of the Salt Grass Trail ride for years. Above is a picture from the 50s. My grandfather had mule teams and two covered wagons. We rode the trail and camped for a week, ending in Houston.

While two of my sisters rode horseback, I preferred riding in the wagon. Here I am with my grandmother. As you can tell, this was an event that was much better in retrospect than living it. February is not the month to camp out!

In any event, I have on my jeans and indian jewelry-yeehaw!

2 for 1 at Eddie's

This is yesterday's class at Eddie's. They were enthusiastic and got a lot done. Thanks, gals!

Eddie's has two classrooms with the latest technology. We took advantage of his flat screen TV by hooking up both the camcorder and the computer. All I had to do was toggle between the two with the remote. Smooth!

It rained again all day yesterday, but we were inside and cozy. I got a salad at Denny's when I had breakfast, so I didn't have to get out at lunch. Worked well and will do it again today. Hopefully we'll see at least a little sun...

Paducah update

Here's another car shot from Paducah. Two years ago the Museum had banners made to hang outside. I'm proud to say they chose my quilt, Escapade, as one of their images.

Yesterday I came to San Jose, CA and will teach for the next 3 days. The weather was miserable, but it is supposed to improve today. Eddie's Quilting Bee is my host. Better get ready!

Vote for Paducah!

Tuesday morning the Advisory Committee was asked to come to a press conference in Paducah. The National Trust for Historic Prservation named Paducah as one of its 12 Distinctive Destinations for 2011. What a shot in the arm for tourism! You can vote for your favorite city at www.preservtionnation.org/ddd. You can vote once a day and it is free. Spread the word. I voted this morning and you can then check the progress of the votes. After only one day, Paducah leads with 26%. The second plac has 11%. Quilters rule!

On my way back to Nashville, I snapped this pic from the car. This is the way the old Executive Inn looks today. The city has recouped some money as it was full of copper pipes and other salvage. Good riddance!

Catching up

There's no picture today as I've been playing catchup and that is very unphotogenic. During the freeze, Mom's house had two burst pipes and our garage door broke (Houston is NOT ready for cold weather!). I've been waiting for repairmen and writing them checks. What fun!

I did have fun Thursday. I spent the day with my niece, Susan, hanging a wall of pictures. She and Ron have four children, so it was a BIG wall. It was nice to spend time with her and think about something creative.

Today I leave for our annual Advisory Committee Meeting at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah. I promise to post pics of the progress on the new hotel. Off to the airport!

Busy weekend

Saturday my sister, Ellen, her husband, Bill and I went to a funeral in Buckholts. We left early. It has been a long time since I saw a sunrise!

The funeral service was so appropriate for Mrs. Hilliard. She and her family are amazing. We met through Girl Scouts when we were young. The Hilliards had 3 girls and we were 4. Mr. Hilliard worked in London on and off and 3 of us (in addition to others) spent the summers with them overseas. Mrs. Hilliard was a free spirit who collected people like others do stamps. They adopted 4 boys whose mother had died as well as 2 Native American girls. Untold numbers of foreign exchenge students lived with them. At the funeral, a man named George spoke. When I asked who he was, it turns out he was a homeless man living in his car. One particularly cold night, Mrs. Hilliard brought him to the barn on their farm to spend the night. He's still there. That sums her up right there. We will all miss you, Lucille!

On the quilting front, I spent Sunday making sample quilts for a new class, Sheer Delights. I made four, each different, so shops can display samples. I mailed the first 2 off today. Hopefully it will be a winner.

We've been enjoying weather in the high 60s, but tomorrow everything is supposed to change. Time to stop typing and cover the plants.

Quilter's Best Friend

Every Wednesday, a group of friends spend the day sewing at Quilting Dellights. They use the classroom next to the street so Lori can sit by the window. This is so that Angel, her labrador, can see her through the window and all is well. I'm not sure who has who trained here!

Today was my free day. Thea and I went to EE Schenck, a wholesaler here in Portland. After lunch, Thea went to work and I got a massage. I spent the early evening at the mall. Found some great tops on sale. I'm now in bed, ready for tomorrow's class. Wonderful day!

First Floral Delights

Here's a part of my first class at Quilting Delights. They did a super job. In fact, they got further than I had thought they would. Way to go, gang!
After class, I shopped a little, got back to the hotel, had an early dinner, did my wash and went to bed at 9:30. Only another frequent traveler would think this was a great evening.

Happy Birthday, Alex!

Friday was Alex Anderson's birthday. We had dinner at Cantina Laredo and another table of quilters ordered this delicious Mexican brownie sent to our table. Quilters, you're the best!
Alex, Ricky and their mates leave today (Monday) for Africa. What an adventure-good luck, guys.
Sunday I got up at 3am for an early flight to Portland, OR, where I'll be teaching all week. I went to bed at 8 last night and am now rarin' to go. Today, I'll teach my new class, Floral Delights. Come back tomorrow for pics and a report on how it went.

Last night was the BCS. Since I'm going to Portland next week, I was rooting for the Oregon Ducks. I had to make my own gear (the pattern will not be available). Unfortunately, my cheer didn't work and Auburn is the National Champ. There's always next year!

2011-Year of the Pilllow

When I taught in Helena at the Sewing Palace, I bought some repro postcards printed on fabric. I finally got around to making them into pillows. This set went to Cathy, who has given me a lot of her decorative pillows. She and Bill both love to fly fish, so these prints were a natural.

Besides fish, I bought these wildlife postcards. I love them and the fish ones below in our den.

Now that I've gotten that out of my system, it's on to quilting!

Holidaze

Okay, here's the quick version of the holidays. Christmas Eve we had Lester's family and my sister, Cathy and her husband, Bill, over for beef tender. We had alreay opened presents, so it was a relaxing evening, visiting and playing Trivial Pursuit, Team Edition.

Christmas Day we went to my sister's in Hockley. One of the highlights was a play. It was definitely off-off-Broadway!

Cathy had given me an Emile Henry pie plate for my birthday and Christmas was the perfect opportunity to use it. The cherry pie was the bomb, even if I do say so myself.

We celebrated the New Year at our beach house in Port O'Connor. It was just the two of us. I worked jigsaw puzzles and Lester did the cooking. Great way to bring in 2011!

Lunch at Barnaby's

Today Lester and I had lunch with our god-daughters, Sophie and Phoebe, at Barnaby's restaurant. We've watched them grow from cute babies to charming young women. Sophie will be off to college next year. Hard to believe!

Cookie Party

Yesterday was my annual Christmas Cookie party. This year our nephew, Alan,and his family came. Above is Alan, Brock, Phoebe, Hollis, India, Lester and Amy.

I learned early on to cover the tables with plastic cloths. Sure makes cleanup a breeze.

Besides cookies, we decorate gingerbread houses. These are foam kits from Michael's. Most of the adornments come with adhesive on the back. For the rest, I found very low temp, battery operated glue guns. They were definitely original works of art...

The best part for me was getting to spend time with the kids. Brock had a great time, playing with everything but toys. Give this kid a hole punch and he's happy. Thanks, Alan and Amy, for sharing your time with us.

Tis the Season to...Shred

The other day I realized my hanging bookshelf system was crooked. The main support had come loose-yikes! After having it repaired, I sorted through the stuff that had been on the top shelf. Long story short, I spent hours shredding 4 years woth of papers. It ended up being 3 trash bags full. Here they are on the curb for pickup today. It is literally a weight off my shoulders!

Quick trip to NYC

Two weekends ago I made a quick trip to NYC to see my niece and her family. Yes, they had just been here, but I needed 3000 miles to qualify for the top level of Continental's OnePass Elite program. What better way to get them? Here are Cate and I in the park. I think you can tell that Cate wasn't happy to be corraled, even for a moment. She's a busy little bee!

Elizabeth and Rich live in Tribeca in a great apartment. They have plenty of room, a rarity in the City.

Playing in Santa Fe

My friends arrived Sunday and we had a busy day. Here are Susan and Loine right before bed.

Yesterday they treated me to a massage at 10,000 Waves. If you haven't been, you should put it on your schedule. Modeled aftr the Japanese Ryokan, it offers massages, facial treatments, hot baths, etc. What a treat after a day of shopping!

We lunched yesterday at one of my favorite restaurants, The Shed. Here are me, Julie, Susan and Loine toasting a wonderful trip.

Before the girls got here, Katie and I went to Jane Sauer's Gallery for a talk by Barbara Lee Smith. I had taken a stitching class from her in the early 90s. She is just as talented now as she was then. BLS is the tall one, with 2 of her friends.

Jody, Katie and I had lunch before the talk. Jody told us about a terrific new fabric shop, and it was TERRIFIC. If you love textiles, don't miss Santa Fe Fabrics on Cordova. It is filled with unusual fabrics and trims. I've been twice on this trip and plan to return!

Gallery Day on Canyon Road

Here's a picture of Katie and her quilt, taken at the opening of Bias, Against the Grain. The show is up until March, so look for it if you're in Santa Fe. It's at a new spot, Community Gallery, which is adjacent to the Sweeney Center.

After the opening, we went to La Boca, a tapas restaurant nearby. We then met another friend for a drink at the Bull Ring. We were home by 8:45. My idea of a perfect night out!

Today we are going to a talk by Barbara Lee Smith at Jane Sauer Gallery. Then we'll check out the galleries where we have some of Mom's paintings on commission. Katie's painting group members also have work, so we'll check that out, too.

Stanley Cup for Alzheimer's

I am now a member of the All Stars for Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative, a charity started by Ami Simms to raise money for Alzheimer's research. This year we are hockey teams. Ami requested a pic, so here's mine. I found the first pic on the internet and Photoshopped it. Sue Nickels informed me that I look good as a Red Wing. Hockey is not my sport-I had no idea which team's uniform that was!

The deal is, each team member makes a small quilt, which will be auctioned off. I plan to start mine as soon as I get home. Our team, Ricky Tims, Caryl Fallert, Mary Sorenson and Judy Matheison, haven't chosen a name yet. Any suggestions?

Cozy in Santa Fe

Yesterday I flew to Albuquerque for the start of a week's vacation. I had lunch with Debbie Caffrey, then drove on to Santa Fe. After a delicious steak at the Bull Ring (enough leftovers for two more meals!) I came back, made a fire, and tucked in for the night.

This is the first time I've been here by myself in a long time. It feels strange but wonderful to get up and not have to do anything. What a luxury!

My plan for the day is to go first to the Artisan, a terrific art supply store. Also, it is one of the few shops in SF that opens early. Being a morning person, this is great. Once the rest of the world wakes up, it's on to the Plaza to see what goodies await.

Tonight I'm going to an opening with Katie Pasquini Masopust, then to dinner. Pics will follow tomorrow.

In case you haven't heard, here is the newest tool for quilters. Pilot makes a FriXxion pen that comes in four colors. It's an erasable gel pen. I bought mine at Target.

Here's the cool part. When you heat the ink, it completely disappears!

Ready for Santa

I love Christmas! All the leaves go in my grandmother's dining table. She loved to entertain and I know she smiles every time the family gathers around it. This year I'm using sherbet cups that belonged to Mom in the centerpiece. We'll miss you, Mom!

I have collected Santas for years. The bookshelf is perfect for showcasing them. A collection of nutcrackers stand guard over the TV. Every year I have to glue gun some of the parts back together, but they're hanging in there.

Iuse this candlestick year round. I love the yin/yang arrangement of shiny pellets for this Christmas incarnation.

Our kitchen island is granite. I love it, but it reads as cold. To warm it up, I use gold and red accents.

Fanfare and Oliso

My second new class is making this wall quilt, inspired by my quilt, Fanfare. It's the second class I'll teach in Clackamas in January.

I used my new favorite sewing aid, my Oliso iron. It is the one that has feet so you don't have to set it on end, a 12' cord and a 30 minute shutoff. I love everything about it, including the cheery yellow color. Who would have thought ironing could be enjoyable??

Today is my second day of Christmas decorating. I always get everything up by Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. That way we have a longer time to enjoy the season. Lester loves it because he can go to Pt O'Connor and come home to Christmas. Works for us...

These are the samples from my new beginner class, Floral Delights. Starting with pre-printed flower panels by Stephanie Brandenburg, students will embellish using couching, bobbin drawing and decorative stitching. They were a lot of fun. I named the class in honor of Quilting Delights in Clackamas, OR. Thea, the shopowner, came up with the idea, the fabric and the incentive. I'll teach this in Clackamas in January.

I'm writing this while the corn casserole cooks, then we're off to Lester's sister's home. My assignment was the casserole and a salad. There are many things to be grateful for...

Cate the Cutie

We had another treat last night. My precious great-niece, Cate, came for dinner. Her parents and grandparents came as well, but who cared??

Cate is 15 months and defintely has a mind of her own. She explored the whole house, stopping periodically to open drawers and climb up on chairs. Here's a pic of her mother, Elizabeth, giving her ice cream for the first time. We were very proud that it was Homemade Blue Bell, a Texas tradition. PS. Cate loved it!

Lester's 65th

It was great to have a week at home. I got a lot of projects done (pics to follow tomorrow)-four small sample quilts for a new class, almost finished a fifth one, but here's the biggie-I AM DONE for Christmas. Yep, everything is bought, wrapped and even shipped. Things are a lot simpler this year as both Lester's and my side of the families decided to just give gifts to the kids. Truly something to be grateful for!

I got back to Houston just in time for Emily and Rand's wedding reception. Talk about a beautiful bride. The reception was great-food stations, a mashed potato bar, cupcakes instead of cake, and Lester's favorite, an ice cream station. The waiters are putting the cartons inside a huge ice sculpture. Driving back to Sacramento was a breeze compared to coming over Donner Pass. I just squeezed by without having to buy chains on the way to Zephyr Point. Going back, it was 50 degrees. I was upgraded to first class-a great birthday present.

Brush with Fame

Yesterday was switch day, when Quilt Market is over and Festival moves in. I got to spend the day with Alex and Ricky as they shot covers for The Quilt Life. The picture above was shot in Sam Houston Heritage Park here in Houston at The Old House. The Park has historical buildings that have been moved from all over TX. If you love history, check it out. What's amazing to me is the park is right on the edge of downtown. When you go out the door of this log cabin, there is a skyscraper directly behind it. Amazing!

Last night was the Awards Ceremony for IQA. Pepper Cory did a great job as emcee. I was one of the judges and it was fun to see the winners. This year's show is spectacular. Congratulations to everyone who entered.

The Sewing Palace

Jenny Yannone, Owner of The Sewing Palace, is smiling here, but she was feeling miserable. Both she and Julie, her manager, have been ill all week. They were troopers to be there during class on Sunday.

Here's part of the class. Students were intent and did a great job. It was a super way to end this trip.

I found these wonderful fabric panels printed from old postcards at the Palace. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them, but I couldn't resist-I bought 8!

Monday was a travel day, once again changing planes in Denver. I'm racking up the air miles on this one-over 4000. It sure is good to be home, though. Today I had lunch with my sister, Ellen, unpacked, did the wash and got a massage. Now it's off to bed after a full day.

Bernina in Billings

Look what greeted me as I drove up to the Bernina Sewing Center in Billings. I love it!

Doris Holzer, the owner, had rented an empty shop one door down from her shop. She and her staff did a lot of work to get it ready for us. Thanks, guys. The picture above is from a two-day class. The first day ran from 2-7 as I flew in at 1. Tight call, but the flights cooperated and I made it in time.

Saturday was a one-day class. I left immediately afterwards to drive 3 1/2 hrs. to Helena.

For those of you who think owning a shop is a life of glamour, here's Doris performing one of her "glam" duties.

Bend Again

It is such a luxury to teach two days in the same place. I can leave everything set up. Our second class was just as enthusiastic as the first. You all worked hard-good job!

Gail was our "hostess", keeping us supplied with cookies and encouragement. Sharon, sorry I didn't get your pic as well. These two ladies do a great job of making Sew Many Quilts a welcoming haven for quilters. Their displays are so tempting I just had to buy some fabric!

For anyone who thinks this is a glamorous job, yesterday I drove 2 1/2 hrs back to Medford after class. I'm writing this at the ungodly hour of 4:45 am as I wait for my 6 am flight to Billings. I change palnes in Denver, arrive in Billings at 1, and teach from 2-7pm. Thank goodness I'll be in Billings 3 days. I'm looking forward to a little down time after class.

Topstitch Bernina

My first class on this tour was yesterday in Medford, OR. Topstitch Bernina is next door to the Hampton, so that's where the class was. My hotel room was right across from the classroom-talk about convenient!

Karen Hanken and her husband Jonathan are the owners and a delightful couple. Karen somehow finds the time to make prizewinning quilts as well. She was the "centerfold" in the August issue of The Quilt Life. Way to go, Karen!

Today is a travel day to Astoria, which is in the NW corner of the state. I'll see a lot of OR today.

Abbi's Got Rhythm

Saturday I did something I had not done for about 20 years. I went to a high school football game. The reason is my niece, Abbi, who plays in her HS band. She plays percussion-namely, the tambourine, cymbals, and vibraphone (luckily, she does not have to practice at home). It was such fun to see and hear her having fun. It was a beautiful evening and her team won the game. Way to go!

When I was in Santa Fe last month, we went to the opening of Katie Pasquini Masopust's one woman show. I fell in love with this piece and bought it on the spot. It was waiting for me when I got home from TN. I hung it by the door to our patio and next to our bedroom foyer. I love it-thanks, Katie!

Soup to Nuts in Johnson City, TN

My last class of this tour was at Bernina In Stitches. I had a very eager group, even though they may look at little befuddled!

Teresa, one of the shop owners, made Alex's Zesty Confetti Soup for lunch (recipe from The Quilt Life magazine). We all voted it a winner-yum! The other two soups were deelish,too.

I got home Friday night and have been catching up since. I'm just about unpacked, washed, bill-payed and ready to quilt.

Asheville Cotton Company

I started teaching for Robin and Chip just after they bought their shop. It has been great to see it grow. Asheville Cotton Co. is in its 3rd location and I loved it. Snuggled between a Harris Teeter upscale grocery and Starbucks-what more coukd you want??

After class I drove to Johnson City, TN, and my last class of this trip. What a beautiful drive, over mountain passes with scenic overlooks. Last time I drove this route, it was snowing. I definitely prefer the fall!

Sew Original

Tuesday's class was in Boone, NC at Sew Original. This was my first trip to Boone. It is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is a very picturesque town. I was sorry the trip was so short. My drive to Asheville was scenic and I got to the hotel in time for the season premiere of Glee. Life is good.

Gastonia and Sew Much Fun

I love Drusilla Munnell1 She's the owner, pictured above with Yours Truly, of Sew Much Fun. There are several, but I was at the Gastonia location. We had a great time-I hope the students did, too!

You can't go to Gastonia and miss Mary Jo's. This is a fabric store in an old K-Mart. It is HUGE. My pic only shows part of the cottons. There are draperry, notions and specialty fabrics as well. I didn't buy any as I firmly believe in supporting the quilt shops that hire me. Big stores may have bargains, but they don't begin to offer the support my beloved Bernina dealers do. Also, a word of warning- some of their prices on notions were as much as $2.90 more !

Accent Sewing

Yesterday's class was at Accent Sewing in Murrells Inlet, SC. Lillie, 82 years young, came with a sprained ankle. Way to go, Lillie!

The long drive to Gastonia was easier thanks to Sirius Radio. I got to listen to the Texan-Redskin game. My Texans won in overtime-Yes! It was their first win ever in overtime. Things are definitely looking up.

I can't believe the summer of 2010 has come and gone! Lester and I went to Telluride in July to see Les and had a great visit. Labor Day weekend, I was in Hyannis with Ricky Tims Super Seminar, along with uninvited guest, Hurricne Earl. Luckily, he behaved himself and we came through just fine.

Now it's September, and I'm back on the road. I've missed you all! The top pic was yesterdauy's class at Loving Stitches in Fayetteville, NC. I suspect the name came from owner Carol Watkins ability to keep us all in stitches. The other two pics were Wednesday's class at Nancy's Calico Patch in Newport News. Today I travel to Murrells Inlet, SC. In all, I'll teach 8 workshops before I go home on the 24th. I hope they are all as much fun as these two!

Black Canyon Quilt Show

Saturday I drove to Montrose and gave a lecture. We had a full house, as you can see. Thanks to all of you!

The bottom pic shows the ingenious hanging system they used. I have seen PVC pipe used before, but look at the top. They glued on a small diameter pipe which allows them to clip quilts on it. Brilliant!

Reconnecting

Hey, everyone! A lot has happened since I last posted. My Mom was ill and died right before Easter. Life kind went into a holding pattern for awhile. I think it's back on track now.

This weekend Lester and I are in Telluride, visiting with our son, Les. It is gorgeous here. The bottom pic was taken at Allred's, a great restaurant with killer views and food. We have eaten very well!

Today I am driving back to Montrose to do a lecture for the Back Canyon Quilt show. I'll post some pics tomorrow. For now, I'd better pack up and get on the road (story of my life).

Birthday Lunch

On my birthday, one of the attendees invited the teachers to her Lake Tahoe home for lunch. We had no idea of the treat we were about to have. Pictured above are Patty Hawkins, Paula Nadelstern, Layla Khashoggi (our hostess) and Sue Benner. We're standing in front of Layla's mansion.

Layla's home is unbelievable! Turns out, it is the largest privately owned property on Lake Tahoe (72 acres). Layla graciously gave us a tour before we had a delicious lunch in the den. What a great way to spend my b'day-thanks, Layla!

Yesterday was busy. I had a full class at Ann's Fabrics in Canton, MA. I was so busy I didn't get any pictures, but stop by if you're in the area-her shop is full of goodies.

After Ann's, I went to Charlton, MA for an evening lecture/demo. Charlton Sewing Center is in an old church. When I arrived, Mary Jo was trying to decide on fabrics for her first quilt class. It was such fun to see her excitement and get to help with her choices. I think she'll do a spectacular job. You go, Mary Jo!

After my class, I was in for a real treat. Cathy Racine, the owner of Charlton Sewing Center, played "How Great Thou Art" on the organ. A perfect ending for a Sunday.

Portsmouth, NH

Here's some of my students at Portsmouth Fabric Co. (My battery died before I could get the other side of the room). Gretchen has a fun and quirky shop. the classroom is light and airy. We had a great day.

Portsmouth is a charming town, particularly on Fairy Days. The author of the Fairy children's books lives close by and they have Fairy Trail Saturdays. You see little girls dressed up like fairies and throughout Portsmouth there are fairy rests like this one. What fun!

Colby Hill Inn

Last weekend at Trends

Last weekend I was the guest speaker at Trends, a show EE Schenck does for its customers.
The top photo shows an idea I thought was great. The cooler had iced-down bottles of water. Above that is a clothesline with towels to wipe the outside of the bottles. Brilliant!

The bottom pic is Judy Livingston, who coordinated the show. Behind her you can see the Schenck warehouse. I got to shop it after my lecture. I think I spent everything I made that day. It was better than Christmas!

If you tried to contact me Tuesday or Wednesday, you couldn't. I had all the phones off while I filmed a DVD with Ricky Tims and his partner, Justin Shults. Here's a view of setup. Even though Ricky and Justin are experts at this, took quite awhile. We worked hard and steady for both days and got it all done. Below is a picture of our wrapup party- ole!

This view was taken as I drove to Bend. There was a line of cars 2-3 miles long waiting to get to Sisters. Looks like Field of Dreams, no?

For early risers, it's a thrill to watch the Fire Dept hang quilts on the Stitchin' Post. In all, over 1200 quilts were hung by 9 am. amazing!

On the Road Again

Sunday I flew to Portland, my first trip since the break. I got to have lunch in Clackamas with my friend, Thea, before continuing on to Sisters. It was a beautiful drive. I arrived in time to do some shopping. At Bedouin, a funky clothing store, I ran into Sharon and Barbara. They came out of their dressing rooms wearing the same outfits. They tell me this is not the first time this has happened.

After class on Monday, Jean Wells hosted all the teachers and staff to a gourmet dinner at her new home. And boy, was it new. They moved in a week ago! This is the view from Jean's studio. It will be a wonder if she gets any work done with such a stupendous distraction.

Before I left for Sisters, I checked the stitch counter on my 830. I got it in Feb and was gone most of Mar and April. To my amazement, I had stitched 1,276,042 stitches. Have I mentioned that I love this machine??

Recovering from a broken ankle is a humbling experience. My stamina was very low the first 3 weeks. I would do one thing, then be worn out. It also took three times longer to do everything with a boot cast and crutches. It has now been 6 weeks and I am finally getting back to a normal schedule. I'm down to an Ace bandage and walking very carefully.

I did manage to get this little quilt made. It will be in an article in Bernina's Through the Needle magazine later this year. I nfinished two other smnall quilts that I'll post later.

My first travel will be this weekend. I'll be driving to Midland, about 8 hrs., with my sister, Sarah. She hurt her right ankle about the same time I did, but she is still in a boot cast. We won't be hitting any dance halls!

Break Time- Literally

Last Friday I slipped on some wet grass while at the Ricky Tims Super Seminar in Frederick, MD. Alex took me to Urgent Care and we found out that I broke my ankle. This is the first broken bone I've ever had, and I hope it's the last! I'll blog again when there is anything worth saying. Stay tuned...

Paducah's 25th AQS Show

After a LONG trip (over 34 hrs in transit), I got back to Houston at 8:30 pm last Thursday. I went to the airport Friday for a 3:30 flight to come to Paducah, but never left (at 9:45pm, they finally told us they were cancelling the flight!). After 4 hrs sleep, I finally got on as a stand-by and managed to get to Paducah at 1pm. Needless to say, I slept very well Saturday night!

The pic above is the view from my patio. The Executive Inn managed to open, but barely. The group trying to buy it have done the best they can, but between neglect (it has been closed for months) and damage from the Jan ice storm, it is pretty sad. They promise next year will be a vast improvement.

One of the things they have done is gut the patio area and open it to vendors. While it gets very warm, these are the vendors that used to be on the lower level by the pool, better known as "the dungeon". Definitely a step up.
